Most women who have irregular periods have been told at some point that it is “normal” or that they just need to “manage stress.” Some have been prescribed hormonal pills and found their cycle returned only while taking them. A few have undergone every investigation available and been told nothing significant was found.
All of these experiences are real. And none of them constitutes treatment. Irregular menstruation is not a standalone symptom — it is a signal from the body that something in the hormonal, metabolic or emotional system is out of balance. At Dr. Mande’s Clinic in Wakad, Pune, irregular periods are treated as exactly what they are: a systemic condition that needs to be understood before it can be corrected.
Studies referenced by the Indian Council of Medical Research estimate that nearly 35% of women in the 18 to 40 age group in urban India report some form of menstrual irregularity. In the Hinjewadi and Wakad belt, where late-night work hours, high screen time and chronic work-related stress are common, that number is almost certainly higher. Ayurveda has addressed menstrual disorders for centuries — and the protocols it uses are as relevant today as they have ever been.

How Ayurveda Explains Irregular Menstruation
In Ayurveda, the menstrual cycle is governed by Apana Vata — the downward-moving sub-type of Vata that controls all downward-moving physiological functions including menstruation, urination and defaecation. When Apana Vata is disturbed, the timing, flow and quality of the cycle changes.
Ayurveda identifies the following root causes behind menstrual irregularity:
- Vata imbalance (Apana Vata Dushti): The most common root cause. Driven by chronic stress, irregular sleep, excessive travel, dehydration and cold or dry diets. Results in delayed, scanty or absent periods.
- Pitta excess (Rakta Dushti): Excess heat in the blood, leading to heavy, painful, bright-red periods with clots. Often triggered by anger, hot foods, alcohol or inflammatory conditions like endometriosis.
- Kapha blockage (Srotavarodha): Sluggishness and congestion in the menstrual channels, resulting in late, heavy, mucusy periods with cramping. Common in PCOD, obesity and thyroid-related irregularity.
- Dhatu Kshaya (tissue depletion): When the body is nutritionally depleted — through poor diet, post-illness weakness or extreme exercise — there is simply not enough reproductive tissue to sustain a normal cycle.
- Artava Vaha Srotas damage: Damage to the channels governing menstruation itself, which can occur after surgical procedures, extreme hormonal interventions or chronic untreated gynaecological conditions.
What Irregular Periods Actually Mean — and Why It Matters
A normal menstrual cycle runs between 21 and 35 days. Flow lasts between 3 and 7 days. Pain, if present at all, should not interfere with daily function. When any of these parameters consistently fall outside this range, it is classified as a menstrual irregularity.
The most common types of irregular periods seen at Dr. Mande's Clinic:
| Type | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Oligomenorrhoea | Cycles longer than 35 days — periods come every 45, 60 or even 90 days. |
| Polymenorrhoea | Cycles shorter than 21 days — periods come too frequently, every 18 to 20 days. |
| Amenorrhoea | Absence of periods for 3 or more consecutive months (not due to pregnancy). |
| Dysmenorrhoea | Severely painful periods that require bed rest or pain medication to manage. |
| Menorrhagia | Excessively heavy periods lasting more than 7 days or soaking more than one pad per hour. |
| Hypomenorrhoea | Very light periods lasting only 1 to 2 days with minimal flow. |
| Metrorrhagia | Irregular spotting or bleeding between periods. |
| Delayed Periods (non-pregnant) | Cycles that consistently arrive 7 or more days later than expected. |
Each of these patterns points to a different underlying imbalance. A woman with Oligomenorrhoea related to PCOD needs a different treatment from a woman with Amenorrhoea related to nutritional deficiency. This is why the Ayurvedic approach begins with identification — not a blanket prescription.

Ayurvedic Treatment Protocol for Irregular Periods at Dr. Mande's Clinic
Dr. Mande’s treatment for irregular periods is built around a three-stage approach:
STAGE 1 — IDENTIFY THE PATTERN AND ROOT CAUSE
The first consultation involves Nadi Pariksha (pulse reading), a full menstrual history and Prakriti assessment. Dr. Mande maps the type of irregularity, how long it has been present, associated symptoms (pain, mood changes, skin or hair changes, weight gain or loss) and any existing diagnoses. Existing reports — hormonal panels, thyroid levels, pelvic ultrasound — are reviewed if available.
This stage ensures that PCOD-driven irregularity is treated differently from stress-driven irregularity and thyroid-driven irregularity — because they require different Ayurvedic interventions.
STAGE 2 — CORRECT THE UNDERLYING IMBALANCE
Based on the root cause identified, treatment is directed at the specific doshic disturbance:
- For Vata-driven irregular periods: Warm, nourishing diet; Basti therapy; Ashwagandha; medicated ghee; structured sleep; stress reduction through Pranayama
- For Pitta-driven heavy or painful periods: Cooling herbs (Shatavari, Lodhra, Chandraprabha Vati); dietary heat reduction; Virechana in some cases; avoidance of inflammatory triggers
- For Kapha-driven delayed periods with PCOD: Virechana; Kanchanar Guggulu; Trikatu; dietary modification reducing heavy and cold foods; weight correction through metabolic herbs
- For nutritional depletion-driven amenorrhoea: Rasayana herbs; iron and mineral supplementation through Loha Bhasma; dietary rebuilding; Draksha preparations
- For thyroid-related menstrual irregularity: Kanchanar Guggulu; Nasya therapy; specific dietary changes for thyroid correction alongside menstrual management
STAGE 3 — MAINTAIN REGULARITY AND PREVENT RECURRENCE
Once the cycle begins to regularise — which most patients see within 2 to 3 cycles — treatment shifts toward maintenance. This includes:
- Long-term dietary habits that support Apana Vata balance
- Monthly herbal protocols timed to the cycle to sustain regularity
- Seasonal Panchakarma for patients with a pattern of seasonal irregularity
- Stress management practices embedded as daily routine rather than acute intervention
Key Ayurvedic Herbs Used for Irregular Periods at This Clinic
| Herb / Formulation | How It Helps |
|---|---|
| Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) | Primary estrogen-balancing herb. Restores follicular development and regularises the luteal phase in scanty or delayed periods. |
| Ashoka (Saraca asoca) | Classical uterine tonic. Used specifically for heavy, painful and irregular bleeding. Acts directly on uterine muscle tone. |
| Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa) | Reduces excess androgen in PCOD-related irregularity. Restores FSH:LH ratio disrupted in polycystic ovary conditions. |
| Kanchanar Guggulu | Primary formulation for PCOD and thyroid-related menstrual irregularity. Reduces cystic formation and improves metabolic hormone balance. |
| Chandraprabha Vati | Multi-action tablet addressing hormonal irregularity, urinary tract health and pelvic congestion simultaneously. |
| Kumari (Aloe vera) | Corrects Pitta-driven heavy or clotted periods. Reduces uterine inflammation and supports endometrial health. |
| Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) | Cortisol reduction and adrenal support for stress-driven irregular cycles. Also improves thyroid function in subclinical hypothyroid cases. |
| Triphala | Improves gut-hormone connection. Hormonal clearance through the liver depends on healthy digestion—Triphala supports this pathway. |
| Vidarikanda (Pueraria tuberosa) | Nourishes reproductive tissue in cases of amenorrhoea linked to nutritional depletion or post-illness weakness. |
Underlying Conditions Treated at Dr. Mande's Clinic That Cause Irregular Periods
Irregular periods at this clinic are never treated in isolation. Dr. Mande identifies and treats the underlying condition causing the irregularity:
PCOD and PCOS
The single most common cause of irregular cycles in the 20 to 35 age group. Elevated androgens, insulin resistance and cystic ovaries disrupt ovulation and delay or absent the period. Dr. Mande’s PCOD protocol directly addresses the hormonal root cause.
Thyroid Imbalance
Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism disturb the menstrual cycle through different mechanisms. Hypothyroid women tend toward heavy, frequent periods; hyperthyroid women toward scanty, delayed or absent cycles. Thyroid correction through Kanchanar Guggulu and Nasya therapy regularises the cycle as the thyroid function improves.
Stress and Cortisol Excess
Chronic stress suppresses GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) production, which in turn delays or prevents ovulation. Women working long hours in Hinjewadi’s IT sector or managing combined professional and household responsibilities frequently present with stress-induced cycle delays. Ayurvedic management focuses on adrenal regulation, not just menstrual correction.
Nutritional Deficiency and Low Body Weight
Amenorrhoea linked to under-eating, extreme exercise or post-illness weight loss is treated as a Dhatu Kshaya (tissue depletion) condition. Rasayana herbs, dietary rebuilding and iron supplementation through classical Ayurvedic mineral preparations restore the nutritional base the cycle needs to function.
Perimenopause (35 to 50 age group)
Irregular cycles in the late 30s and through the 40s are often the first sign of perimenopause. Ayurveda addresses this transition through Rasayana therapy, Shatavari and structured dietary support — managing symptoms and supporting hormonal transition without synthetic hormone replacement.
Daily Habits That Make or Break Menstrual Regularity
In clinical practice, Dr. Mande consistently finds that the following daily patterns either accelerate or undermine treatment outcomes for irregular periods:
What helps
- Fixed sleep and wake times — Apana Vata regulates itself partly through consistent circadian rhythm
- Warm, freshly cooked meals — raw, cold and processed foods aggravate Vata and slow hormonal clearance
- 10 minutes of Pranayama daily — reduces cortisol measurably within 4 to 6 weeks
- Iron-rich foods through the diet — pomegranate, sesame, dates, jaggery and green leafy vegetables support Rakta Dhatu
- Limiting screen time after 9 PM — blue light suppresses melatonin, which directly affects the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis
What makes irregularity worse
- Skipping meals or eating at irregular times — directly disrupts Samana Vata which governs digestive rhythm and indirectly affects the cycle
- Intense cardio or over-exercise without adequate calorie intake — suppresses ovulation through the hypothalamic pathway
- Staying up past midnight consistently — the most underrated cause of cycle delays in working women
- Chronic use of antacids or stomach suppressants — impairs gut-hormone clearance through the liver
- Using hormonal pills to "regularise" without addressing the underlying cause — creates dependency without correction
